Stone Pine – The Queen of the Alps in Engadin

The stone pine, botanically Pinus cembra, is one of the most distinctive trees in Engadin. It grows up to 2,500 meters, lives for several hundred years, and is perfectly adapted to the harsh conditions of the high Alps. Its wood has always been sought after for its essential oils, fine grain, and warm color.

Why does stone pine wood have such a characteristic smell?

The dense, resinous wood fibers give the stone pine its unmistakable scent, which is considered calming. This very scent makes stone pine products a popular souvenir from Engadin – authentic, natural, and with a true connection to the region.
